This file is part of the the NLP general information server Web site. It lists many NLP resources. It was originally written by Stever Robbins, with later additions from all over the place.
These are books which are typically recommended for people just learning about NLP, or interested in a bit of background. In general, the books lag what is currently being taught in seminars by up to ten years. In a field this young, knowledge is turning over rapidly. Frogs into Princes, by Grinder & Bandler, 1979 - the basic NLP introductory text. It's a workshop transcript, so organized differently than a normal "how to" book. Order from Amazon (retail $13.50, you pay $10.80).
Using Your Brain—for a CHANGE, by Richard Bandler, 1984 - the first, and I think best, book on "submodalities," which are the basis of most NLP developments since the early 80s. It's also fun to read and well edited. Order from Amazon (retail $13.50, you pay $10.80).
Introduction to Neurolinguistic Programming, by Joseph O'Connor and John Seymour, 1994, - a good book that covers most NLP topics, presented in a very accessible, didactic way. This will give you a good overview of many of the NLP models. It draws material from most of the NLP trainers, so is more comprehensive than any other NLP book. Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, Vol I, by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. This is about hypnotic language patterns, and it has a lot of really good stuff in it. Order from Amazon (you pay $18.95).
TRANCE-formations, by Grinder and Bandler, 1980? - an overview of the hypnotic patterns used in NLP. Many of these were modeled from Milton H. Erickson. These go beyond the language patterns in Patterns I, however. Order from Amazon (retail $13.50, you pay $10.80).

IF YOUR GOAL IS TO LEARN THE NLP SKILLS, TAKE A TRAINING. BOOK LEARNING MAY GET YOU PART WAY THERE, BUT NLP IS A FULL BODY SPORT
People learn skills by imitation and direct coaching. If you try to acquire a skill from a book, you'll probably invent lots of bad habits along with it. Make sure you choose a trainer who is very skillful, so they are a living demonstration of their own skills.
THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH AN 'NLP' SHINGLE WHO ARE LOUSY AT NLP. In fact, nine out of ten of them aren't even in the top ten percent, in terms of skill level.

This is Richard Bandler's company. Richard is my favorite trainer, though he teaches very much through story and metaphor. If you insist on a didactic understanding of what you're learning, you may find him difficult. If you want to walk away with skills, he is excellent at "installing" skills in you unconsciously.
Much of the training Richard does is when he is sponsored by other institutes. He only runs a couple of programs directly each year.
As an organization, The First Institute has been through many phases. Last time I dealt with them, it was hard to get a call returned, and they were pretty disorganized. This may have changed, or it may not have. Regardless of how his organization runs, his material is superb.
Richard says that "all around the country, there are people stuck at various levels of my [Richard's] development." It's true. You can tell when a trainer stopped training with Richard by what they teach.
He will present state of the art material which no one else even comes close to. He teaches using NLP more than any other trainer I know of.
Richard calls his latest developments "Design Human Engineering™", rather than NLP.
Be expectant: Richard is a genius. He's also a very ... unique ... individual. Expect an experience totally unlike your preconceptions. Judge your experience on the skills you exhibit after the training; not on your level of conscious understanding.
I have trained with Richard. I highly recommend his summer intensive "Trainer's Training" and "Design Human Engineering." His shorter "Patterns of Persuasion: NLP in Sales" is also quite good.

The primary trainers are John LaValle and his wife Kathleen. They also sponser Richard Bandler. John is a co-trainer with Richard Bandler's, so his material is very up to date.
I have trained briefly with John. He has a "New Jersey" attitude, which is a very distinctive style. He seems good at what he does, but I haven't seen him in action in his own institute, so I can't speak directly to the quality of his specific programs.

The South Central Institute of NLP has been operating since 1982. The NLP Institute of Chicago has been offering Practitioner and Master Practitioner trainings since 1987. Their trainings generally follow the model developed by John Grinder and further developed by NLP Comprehensive. There is an emphasis on small-chunk skills development, with unconscious learning followed by conscious learning. Their training system is based on ecology and respect for the participants.
The 25-Day Practitioner training is offered on an every-other-weekend basis starting in late January each year, and Master Practitioner Training is offered in the fall of even-numbered years. Modeling training with David Gordon is offered every 4th fall.
A pair of one-day MiniConferences is offered annually, with one day devoted to NLP in business and the other to NLP for personal development.
Shorter classes range from one-evening programs on special topics to one-weekend programs that introduce NLP or pursue special topics and programs that meet one night per week for 4 to 6 weeks. Short programs include Skills for the 21st Century, Conflict Resolution, NLP & Sales, and Conversational Change. A three-weekend course in Ericksonian Hypnosis is also available.
Institute Directors Klaus Boettcher and Virginia Brubaker each have a private practice in psychotherapy. Brubaker has a master's degree in Counseling and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. She also practices divorce mediation with Attorney (and NLP trainer) Gail Schiesser. Boettcher practices hypnotherapy and executive coaching. Both Brubaker and Boettcher were trained in the early 80's by John Grinder, Leslie Cameron Bandler, Robert Dilts, David Gordon, Lynn Conwell, Steven Gilligan, Paul Carter, and others, with additional training in the later 80's from NLP Comprehensive.

Robert is one of the main source of substantive new material in the NLP community. Judith worked with John Grinder for several years on "new code NLP." I haven't trained with them since Todd died, but my experience with the Dynamic Learning Center and its graduates is that it has one of the best (if not the best) Master Practitioner trainings around.
I have trained extensively with Robert and some with Judith, taking at least their "Unified Field Theory," "Belief Systems and Health," "Pragmagraphics," "Leadership Conference," and "Trainer's Training." I can vouch for their quality.

NLP Comprehensive is the largest and probably most well known NLP training center. They have a large staff of trainers and are increasingly professional in their approach. They also have a large catalog of NLP books and tapes.
NLP Comprehensive runs trainings that are very fine grained, detailed, and they break everything into small, learnable pieces. While Richard teaches by distracting the conscious mind and teaching the unconscious, Comprehensive engages conscious understanding throughout.
They seem to be good, solid trainers and therapists, who run a smoothly oiled training company.
NLP Comprehensive also has a huge catalog of NLP resources, including audiotapes and videotapes. The videotapes are available for sale or rental.
I have never trained with Steve, Connirae, or any of their trainers, so I can not speak directly to quality of specific programs.
