MP3/audio searches on AltaVista's search service have more than doubled
in the week following the introduction of new multimedia search centers.
Figures released by the company show that users logged more than one
million MP3/Audio queries in the last week recorded, an 123 percent increase
in MP3/Audio traffic week-over-week. AltaVista's new MP3/Audio, video and
image search capability is apparently built on an index of more than 30
million documents.

Multicast network for Europe
A joint venture between Madge Networks and RealNetworks has been formed
with the intention to: "build, operate and market the largest European
managed network for streaming media".
The new Madge Broadcast Network (MBN), scheduled to go live in 2Q 2000,
is being designed to serve European (and US) content providers wishing
to distribute their streaming media in Europe.
