2. General URAN Project characteristics

Project of building National Telecommunication Network for Research and Education Institutions in Ukraine with access to Internet intends to create Computer Information Infrastructure for Science and Education.

Project realisation will allow:

The Project has been developed by Ministry of Education of Ukraine, NASU and KPI. Legal basis for the project is outlined in National Program of Informatisation.

3. URAN Project: Main Definitions

URAN (Ukrainian Research and Academic Network) project is being realised according to Joint Resolution of Ministry of Education of Ukraine and Presidium of NASU and conception approved/revised by NATO and partner Universities from Germany and Netherlands (Aachen University and Delft TU - Comments Y.D.).

To facilitate project realisation the Association of Research and Education Network Users have been created. Members of Association are Universities and Research Institutions of NASU. Executive Body of Association is the Center of European Integration (CEI), regional structure includes Regional Centers of Association and Network.

The founding members of Association are:

  1. Center of European Integration (CEI)
  2. Ministry of Education of Ukraine presented by Institute of Methods and Tools for Education
  3. National Academy of Science of Ukraine (NASU) presented by International Education Center of Information Technologies (ICIT) under auspice of Institute of Cybernetics
  4. National Technical University of Ukraine "Kiev Polytechnic Institute"
  5. Institute of Applied System Analysis of Ministry of Education and NASU
  6. State University "Lvivska Polytechnica", Lviv
  7. National Mining Academy, Dnipropetrovsk
  8. Donetsk State Polytechnic University, Donetsk
  9. Odessa Polytechnic University, Odessa
  10. Kharkiv State Polytechnic Institute
According to Statute Association is open to new members. Currently Association has more that 40 members.

URAN basic principles:

  1. The main goal of the Project is building National Backbone Network of Research and Education organisations with Internet access
  2. The main components of the Network are Kiev Communication Center with access to Internet and 5 Regional Centers in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv, Odessa
  3. At the first stage, Project resource will be used on building backbone and creation of organisational and technical structures for network operation and management.
